At the beginning of this New Year, as we begin to take up the work of the League for another year, I would like to share with you all the following reflection about the Gospel of the day on 30th November 2012. (Mt 4:18-22)

“What is God's call in your life? When Jesus chose his first disciples, he called ordinary people. Peter and Andrew were brothers and fishermen by trade. Like the other apostles they were non-professionals who had no wealth or position. In choosing ordinary people Jesus made extraordinary claims—to leave all—family, kin and occupation—for the kingdom of God. When the Lord calls us to follow him, he makes the same claim—let nothing stand between you and Jesus. He chose these men, not for what they were, but for what they would be capable of becoming under his direction and power. When the Lord calls us to serve, we must not shrink back because we think that we have little or nothing to offer. The Lord takes what ordinary people, like us, can offer and uses it for greatness in his kingdom.”  Fr Reuben Tellis

This reflection is deeply assuring and challenges us as Catholic women not to ‘shrink back’ when the Lord calls us to serve, and to have trust in Him and in ourselves.

Our Governing Body Executive met in January to plan the year ahead. This was a wonderful opportunity to ‘gather ourselves’, and to hopefully begin the New Year with ideas and enthusiasm that will carry through to the Dioceses and Branches.

Jeanette Sheahan and Monica Clark completed their 9 years on Governing Body at the end of 2012, and I would like to thank them for their dedicated involvement and commitment while serving on Governing Body. On behalf of all the members, I welcome Ann Robinson and Madge Fahy, the newly elected members to the Governing Body this year.

Our Conference Dates for 2013 are: Wagga Wagga Diocese on 30th April in Albury, Melbourne Diocese on May 15th at Mary Glowrey House, Sandhurst Diocese on May 22nd in Tatura, Ballarat Diocese on May 29th hosted by the Ballarat Cathedral Branch, Sale Diocese on June 5th in Sale. The General Conference will be hosted by the Melbourne Diocese and held in Geelong in August.

The President’s Collection for 2012 raised $2655.05 and we also sent further cheque for $250 to the Good Samaritan Inn. Our Branches can be truly proud of this result. Please remember that Branches can nominate a charity for the 2013 Collection. Just send your nomination with an explanation to the General Secretary by end of April. The Governing Body will make a decision and an announcement will be in the Horizon and your Diocesan News. Collections will be taken during August to October, closing on the 31st October.

Branches meeting will start again shortly after the Christmas break.  We welcome all our new members!  May this year be fulfilling and successful for each of you.  May the Holy Spirit and Mary Help of Christians strengthen and guide us in the work of the League.

God Bless,
